Letojanni is a charming seaside town near Taormina, nestled between the headlands of S. Alessio and S. Andrea. It sits just above sea level on Sicily’s Ionian coast, about an hour from both Messina and Catania. With its mild climate and clear blue waters, it’s a popular spot in summer—perfect if you’re after a relaxing beach break.
You’ll find traces of ancient history scattered throughout the area, from old aqueducts to remnants of early settlements. It’s also a great base for exploring nearby attractions like Taormina, Mount Etna, Savoca, Forza d’Agrò, and the lively cities of Catania and Messina—all within an easy drive.
Letojanni’s origins likely go back to the Greeks and later the Romans. It started to grow in the 1600s, when a noble family built a palace there. Fishing was the heart of the town’s economy for centuries, and a coastal tower once protected locals from pirates. Things really picked up in the 19th century with the arrival of the coastal road and railway.
Today, Letojanni is known for its long beach, local agriculture—like olives, citrus fruits, and almonds—and laid-back holiday vibe. You’ll also be walking in the footsteps of notable figures like surgeon Francesco Durante and writer Bianca Garufi.
If you’re there in March, you might catch the celebration of Saint Joseph, the town’s patron. But the real highlight is in August, when his statue is paraded out to sea with music and boats—an event well worth seeing.
Don’t leave without trying the food. Expect plenty of seafood, refreshing granita, and sweet treats like piparelle, nzuddi, and pignolata. It’s Sicily at its most authentic.
